Acupuncture in Pregnancy

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture specifically, have been utilised as a standalone therapeutic model to address pregnancy related conditions and disorders in China for thousands of years. These days it is often sought out by women wanting a natural option to deal with pregnancy symptoms such as nausea and vomiting and musculoskeletal pain.

Pregnancy is such an exciting but often somewhat overwhelming period in a woman’s life. There is often so much confusion as what to eat, what not to eat, what supplements to take and what medications are safe and so on. Being what is known as a complimentary medical model, TCM may be a useful adjunct to conventional pregnancy care. Particularly for women who feel they need some extra help and support.

At Innate Harmony we have been providing acupuncture and other TCM related services to pregnant women for over 15 years. Working alongside Obstetricians and midwives we are committed to supporting women through their pregnancy journey and beyond. Not every pregnancy is straightforward and often our care and expertise is sought out at various stages. Whether it be for issues in the first trimester such as nausea and fatigue or for the management of lower back or pelvic pain throughout the pregnancy, we see women at any time during their gestation.

Birth Preparation

For a pregnant woman the time leading up to birth can be extremely daunting, especially for a first time mother. Often by this stage our patients are completely exhausted, often in pain and sometimes anxious about what is about to happen. Usually we see women weekly, from 36 weeks gestation right up until they are ready to give birth. At this time our treatments are focused on the individual and their specific needs. We also like to involve the partners at this point, teaching them acupressure points that are useful for labour and birth. Indeed research shows that both acupuncture and acupressure may be beneficial for the management of pain in labour and birth (1).
